Fragile Territories is a laser and sound installation by Robert Henke (a.k.a. Monolake). The installation runs on three Mac Mini computers, two for the four lasers and one for sound, code written in MaxMSP.

Mind boggling noises: ISAM Live

I watched Amon Tobin’s performance of his latest “ISAM” album live on the closing night of STRP 2011.
Instead of the usual boring DJ – bent – over – a – desk – and – waiving – stupidly – with – his – hands, Tobin’s DJ booth was integrated in a large 3D video wall which displayed a dazzling array of video fragments following the music:
An impressive combination of intricate sound sampling and VJ-ing. The claim on www.amontobin.com that this combination of music and video art provides “a beyond 3-D experience experience” by providing a “stunning multi-dimensional/shape shifting 3-D art installation surrounding Tobin and enveloping him and the audience” was fulfilled IMO, although there was not much (if any) interaction with the audience during the concert: it was so overpowering that you just watched it..
Altogether much more interesting than the Aphex Twin concert which followed “”ISAM Live” and seemed to meander on and on…

I watched a Chris Cunningham VJ performance at the last STRP Festival and wasn’t that impressed by it. Thought it was too much of a paste-up of older music video’s, a bit like the trailer below:
But today I accidentally stumbled across this video annex remix of a Gil Scott-Heron song (remember “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised“?) on his website and this really is impressive, both as a 6 minute video and a song. This remix is actually telling a story, instead of just being a sequence of random image and sound fragments.
Apparently this “New York is Killing Me” video/remix was shown on 3 screens in the MOMA somewhere in September, 2010 as part of the PopRally program.

Currently MU gallery in Eindhoven is exhibiting “funware” or “software dealing with this Fun-factor in software development”. Seventeen projects of funware artists are shown in which playing with software is the starting point, are being brought together in MU.
The exhibition includes the “Naked on Pluto” work by Marlous de Valk, one of the most well-known Dutch funware artists IMO.
She is part of GOTO10, an international collective of artists and programmers working in the field of digital art and Open Source Software. She is also the editor of the FLOSS+Art ebook, which “critically reflects on the growing relationship between Free Software ideology, open content and digital art. It provides a view onto the social, political and economic myths and realities linked to this phenomenon”. I visited the STRP Art & Technology Festival 2010 event in the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven for 3 days (like I do every year).
Was impressed by Underworld, Monolake and… The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew ’77 concerts.
STRP 2010 seemed to be more focused on music then art, but there were still some memorable expositions in this 2010 edition.
Best installations/expositions were IMO The Game of Life – Wave Field Synthesis installation and the La Dispersion du Fils 3D video environment of Jean Michel Bruyère.
And BTW: bought some interesting video stuff at the WormShop STRP Festival stand.
