From September 10 to 13, the Gogbot Festival 2015 will be held again in Enschede, NL.

Gogbot is the largest yearly Dutch multimedia/media art event. This years festival theme is “the internet of things“, in which I also have a professional interest. Focus is on the influence internet connected devices have on us and society:

The festival is held on multiple locations in Enschede and has art, lectures and music program tracks. Collaborating media artists include a.o. Dries de Poorter and Julius Popp who will present his BIT.FALL installation:

I’ll visit the festival opening on September 10. Don’t miss it if you are anywhere near Enschede and are interested in disruptive media art!

Tonight the STRP Biennale 2015 will start in the Klokgebouw on Strijp-S in Eindhoven. The STRP biennial brings together art, technology and experimental pop culture and connects them to interested audiences. With its interactive art, light art, robotics, performances, experimental music and films, lectures and workshops STRP offers a glimpse into the near and sometimes distant future of our technology-driven culture. The topic of this edition is “SCREEN ON | NO SCREEN”:  the electronic screen. As is described on the STRP website:

.Screens are all around us, and they’re not only becoming bigger, smarter and more interactive, but also thinner, sharper and more flexible. The STRP Biennial 2015 investigates the thin line between the material and immaterial image. We show how our relation with the images that are moving all around us is getting more and more complex. It’s getting very hard to separate ourselves from them, sometimes we immerse ourselves in them, but at the same time we are getting better at controlling the images.”

 

The festival opens with a performance by Robert Henke (a.k.a Monolake, a regular participant at the STRP festival). He will show an updated version of his Lumiere audio-visual performance, simply called Lumiere II. I will be there to attend it. Four specially crafted lasers are linked to the world-famous Ableton DAW software, that was co-developed by Henke, to create animated patterns aligned to sounds with it.  The video above contains an excerpt of the original Lumiere laser performance.

Be sure to visit STRP 2015 too, if you are interested in cutting edge tech art and are near Eindhoven.

Bryce Dessner, guitar player of  US rock band The National is currently the composer-in-residence of the Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven.

As part of the Composer in Residence series of the Muziekgebouw, a concert will be given on Thursday 07/11 by New York all-star band Bang-on-a-Can, who will be joined by special guest Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth fame.  Bang-on-a-Can All Stars have included several contemporary composed guitar pieces in their repertoire, such as the Electric Counterpoint classic of Steve Reich:

The pieces played are made by contemporary composing rock guitarists, including Fred Frith, one of my all-time favorite guitar players:

With this program, this may be a very interesting first crossover concert of Bryce Dessner’s stay as a composer-in-residence IMHO.  So I will be there.

After the disappointing 2011 STRP Festival, the event has transformed itself into a bi-annual festival. It will take place from March 1 to 10.

STRP BIENNIAL is 10 days of hybrid music, art and technology for curious people.

Of course I will be there at the Klokgebouw building at Strijp S, Eindhoven.

I watched Amon Tobin’s performance of his latest “ISAM” album live on the closing night of STRP 2011.
Instead of the usual boring DJ – bent – over – a – desk – and – waiving – stupidly – with – his – hands, Tobin’s DJ booth was integrated in a large 3D video wall which displayed a dazzling array of video fragments following the music:

An impressive combination of intricate sound sampling and VJ-ing. The claim on www.amontobin.com that this combination of music and video art provides “a beyond 3-D experience experience” by providing a “stunning multi-dimensional/shape shifting 3-D art installation surrounding Tobin and enveloping him and the audience” was fulfilled IMO, although there was not much (if any) interaction with the audience during the concert: it was so overpowering that you just watched it..

Altogether much more interesting than the Aphex Twin concert which followed “”ISAM Live”  and seemed to meander on and on…

From November 18 to 27, this year’s leading Dutch music,art and technology festival will be held again in the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven: STRP Art & Technology. And as usual, I will be attending this festival.

STRP 2011

STRP Festival has grown into one of the largest art/music/technology festivals in Europe. In this years EXPO an overview will be shown of 50 years of Dutch media and technology art. In the weekends an international music line up is planned in which Amon Tobin, Aphex Twin and SpeedyJ’s Collabs will appear. Not to be missed!

Some 20 years ago I bought an obscure Philips/Harlekijn LP containing the famous Ballet Mecanique by George Antheil.  In 1924 Antheil worked with Fernand Leger on a DaDa inspired abstract film called “Ballet Mecanique”. The music for this film was to come from electric bells, tree airplane propellers, a siren and piano rolls in 16 player pianos linked to a central control panel. However, the technology to realize this “central control panel” to synchronize all these player pianos was yet not available in 1924, so Legers film and Antheil’s score went their separate ways. The Ballet Mecanique score was technologically so ahead of its time, that it could not be performed in the way it was conceived in the 1920’s.

To resolve this issue, Antheil prepared a new reduced version of the piece for eight pianos, one player piano, four xylophones, percussion and two airplane propellers. This drastically simplified score was presented to audiences in 1926 and 1927 in Paris and New York. The work was never published in its original form. In 1953 a heavily cut version of Ballet Mecanique was published by George Antheil which featured only four pianos. This is the score of which a live version played during the 1976 Holland Festival was recorded for the above mentioned Harlekijn LP.

Bad Boy Made Good DVD

Last year I stumbled across a DVD called “Bad Boy made Good. The Revival of George Antheil’s 1924 Ballet Mecanique” on the antheil.org web site. The DVD documents a revival of the original orchestration of Antheil’s magnus opus using the 16 player pianos for which the piece was originally intended. Using MIDI technology to control the 16 player pianos (for which now Yamaha Disklaviers were used), it was now possible to synchronize the pianos in the way Antheil originally intended in 1924. The DVD documents the preparation and the world premiere of this original version of the Ballet Mecanique in the Concert Hall of the University of Massachusetts in Lowell on November 18, 1999. It also contains the Léger film with the newly realized 16-player-piano version of Antheil’s score.
